Currently, there are only two known populations of gray whales. One of them is the Okhotsk-Korean population, which migrates in the summer to feed on the shelf of northeastern Sakhalin. This population was once on the brink of complete extinction due to whaling. To prevent the extinction of this species, the gray whale is now listed in the Red Data Book of Russia.
